Do You Like Balut
Balut is the second most recognizable Philippine delicacy behind only Lumpia. I had my first experience with balut as a young sailor in the late 70’s who after a few San Miguels or a shared pitcher of mojo would take the challenge of eating one or two.
For the uninformed, balut is a two week old duck embryo, still in it’s shell, baked in high heat until the yolk is cooked. I’ve heard rumors about them being buried in the ground for a time but I’m not sure if that is true. Balut has been featured on the US TV show Fear Factor, the show where contestants eat things like maggots and bugs with the prize going to the person who eats the most. I wish I could have been on the show when the thing to eat was balut. I would have taken home the first prize except for the fact you aren’t allowed to drink beer on the show while eating. Balut is usually bought from a street vendor who goes from house to house calling out Balllllutttt! I’ve heard that balut is an aphrodisiac and that’s why they sell it at night before everyone goes to bed. But I’ve also been told that it is sold at night because when it’s dark you can’t see what it looks like. Check out this video on balut:

Hmm.. I like balut… Actually i love to eat Balut… it’s one of my favorite filipino food. Balut is not only an aphrodisiac food. It is also good for your health ( but don’t eat too much)… I remember my grand parents told me that Balut is good for the old people …
Jies last blog post..Oh my Baby!
Hi Jie
I believe that Balut is good for you also. Did your grandparents ever tell you why it is good for old people?
You’re kidding right? Is there any place to buy junk food – its at the top of my food pyramid:-}
OregonArtGuys last blog post..HURRY! This one won’t last long!
Hi OregonArtGuys
LOL Of course there is junk food in the Philippines some of which you have never heard of.
Just about every fast food establishment you have in the US is in the Philippines. Check out my earlier post http://movingtophilippines.com/2008/08/25/my-favorite-place-to-eat-in-the-philippines/
Ah yuck ! As much as I love the Philippines & the people, this is one food I draw the line at. I can cope with squid oozing black ink all over your hands and mouth as you eat it, but BALUT !!!
No way, I’ll pass on this little treat thanks.
Yuck? don’t you know that it is good for old people. Good for your grandparents but bad for too much eating balut.
Balut may have bad smells but if you taste it . Hmm yummy! it’s delicious
