I prefer the provinces over all of the cities. I do like to be within an hour but right now my home is 126km away from Cagayan de Oro and 62km from Butuan. I guess I’m just a country boy regardless of where I am.

Hello! I really enjoy reading this blog, as I am about to move to the Philippines in the next year or so. I am approaching my retirement in the US Army later this year, and will be moving there with my Filipina wife, whose family lives on the south end of Makati, near the American cemetery. We have been preparing for this move now for the last couple of years, and quite frankly I’m very nervous about it!! However I promised my wife a few years back that we would move back after I retired, and I’ll admit it is an exciting place to visit… just wondering what it will be like living there long term.

I have heard of many people crossing the border into Mexico to get dental work done. I would definitely not recommend this practice, as it will get you into trouble if you can’t go down there continually.

It is amazing to me the comments about The US economy but at the same time immigrants keep coming in drogues.People retiring in Philippines face harship too ,like medical care and adaptation to a new way of life.If you are well off than you are ok anywhere in the world not just there.I have been there and i see a lot of americans struggling and nobody to watch their backs. If you are married expect to support an extended family of numerous siblings with ever ending demands.
So weigh the situation with pros and cons before taking the plunge .

Hi just read your post on changes, Oh my name is Charles Harman I run the website retiringphilippines.org. One change that affected me in a big way was with my high blood pressure medications. The first day I arrived here I was taken down to the family business “The Cool Zone Internet Cafe” and within about 15 minutes of arriving there I passed out. It turned out my medications were too strong for the Philippines, which I thought was strange I went from 20 mg to 10 mg which fixed my situation for two years. I lived in Bogo City northern Cebu from April 2004 untly October 2006, then we moved to Texas for four years. After that I once again returned to the Philippines and had several more passing out episodes all of them with blood pressuer too low. 40/80 and 60/80. I have now cut my 10mg pills in half and doing fairly well now.
